Self-knowledge is the beginning of self-improvement.

Intellectual Awakening and Personality Development

Man is an intellectual being. He is endowed with a mind, which is his greatest faculty. It is only the possession of this mind and his independent thinking, which distinguish him from other life forms – plants and animals. It is only through the development of his mind that he becomes intellectually awakened, otherwise we can say that he lives at an animal level.

It is said that man is born with unlimited potential. In fact an individual brain is made up of 100 million billion billion particles. What are these particles? These are particles of potential information. What man has to do is unfold his potential by intellectually and spiritually developing his mind. This is what we call personality development. But how can one develop his personality spiritually and intellectually? At CPS we believe that spiritual development or intellectual development is to do with the mind; therefore, spiritual progress is just another name for learning the art of right thinking and the art of de-conditioning of the mind. And this leads to intellectual progress or intellectual development or the development of man's personality. This is the main target of man. The more one de-conditions the mind, the more one will gain in spiritual or intellectual development – thus developing his personality.

CPS and its global partners are training individuals in the art of de-conditioning to help them develop their personality according to the principles laid down by their Creator. We usually see in the world is that man lives a self-oriented life by following his own whims and desires. But what is the end-result of such a self-oriented life? We have repeatedly seen that people who live self-oriented lives are faced with stress, depression and boredom. To overcome such handicaps in their lives, they look towards different sources such as yogic exercises, meditation, etc. At CPS, we make people realize that it is only through the developing of their personality according to their Creator’s principles through the Art of Conversion can they achieve peace. Just as the engineer of a machine knows how to make the machine function; in the same way it is only the Creator of man who knows how man can achiever everything positive in life. To develop his personality what man has to do is re-engineer his mind consciously – to break the habits of self-oriented living and replace them with those of God-oriented living.

This can also be understood scientifically. There are two major parts of the human brain. One is the conscious mind and the other is the unconscious mind. When a thought enters the human mind, it does so initially in the conscious mind. Gradually, in due course, it reaches the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is the part where every thought is preserved forever, although that is not in the grasp of man’s conscious mind. Our habits are under the control of unconscious mind. To develop his personality, what man has to do is to activate his mind whenever he has a negative thought or the need to break an old habit so as to convert it into a positive thought and a positive habit. Consequently, in the next stage when this thought moves on to the unconscious mind, it is stored as something positive rather than negative.

For instance, if any thought of hatred enters his conscious mind, he has to quell that hatred and convert it into thoughts of love. When some thought comes to mind, which produces feelings of jealousy, he should transform this into a sense of acknowledgement. Whenever his ego is touched, whatever may be the issue, he should convert his egoism into modesty. The urge to be selfish, whatever the situation, should be converted into selflessness. Likewise, if he thinks he is being deprived of his rights, he should turn his indignation at such injustice into gratitude.

This was the case of our developing habits. What about the habits that have already been formed? Our habits are under the control of and stored in our unconscious mind. If we want to break our bad habits, what we have to do is consciously intervene into our unconscious mind to convert and store it as a good habit.

Therefore, to develop his personality, man must become disciplined and not allow his personality to develop under the influence of external incentives and based on his bad habits. He should by his own conscious decisions construct his personality on the basis of higher principles. Only then will he be of an intellectually and spiritually developed character. He has to shake and jolt and remould his personality to abide by the plan of the Creator. He has to turn himself into the kind of person who is shaped not by society, but by spirituality and is thus able to live a God-oriented life.

Those men and women who succeed in building such a personality become unilateral rather than bilateral in their ethics. They develop intellectually and spiritually as the will find that the storehouse of their consciousness is a treasury of positivism. It is completely free of negativism. It is positive personalities such as these who will not only live peacefully in this world but will also achieve salvation in the next.
