God’s faithful servants act on angelic promptings, while the rebellious take their cue from the devil.

Understanding Spirituality

Jesus Christ once said: “Man cannot live by bread alone.” This means that physical food cannot give man complete fulfillment. Something more is required. This something more is spirituality. If food is needed for nourishment of the body, spirituality is needed for nourishment of the soul. Both are required for the complete development of the human personality.

We know that the human body is nourished by material food, but the question arises as to how our soul is supposed to receive its nourishment. The essence of the soul can be likened to an ore, while the essence of spirituality can be likened to steel. How can this ‘ore’ of the soul be developed into the ‘steel’ of spirituality? In the light of my experience, high thinking alone gives us the answer to this question. This means thinking by rising above the mundane. All men and women are confronted, almost daily, by such situations as give rise to negative thoughts. It is in situations such as these that the soul has to be nourished and nurtured so that it may develop properly. Giving negative responses to negative situations leads to the erosion of spirituality. Consequently, the soul suffers from starvation. On the contrary, giving positive responses to such situations leads to the spiritual nourishment of the soul. In short, one can be blessed by a developed soul by opting for the way of forgiveness in moments of anger; converting sentiments of jealousy into those of well-wishing, negativity into positivity, hatred into love, diffusing tensions, instead of causing them to mount: above all, converting material loss into non-material gains, by opting for the course of introspection, when beset by complaints and grievances.

Spirituality, thus serves as an intellectual booster for one’s personality. Spirituality elevates one from the material to the non-material world. Spirituality enables one to become an intellectual human being, rather than an earning machine. In our present world, people are generally masters of the art of earning. But, they have no mastery of the art of thinking. For this reason, everyone appears to be a physical giant. But, at the same time, he is an intellectual dwarf. This disproportionate development of the human personality has created a number of problems. Among these, one is known as ‘tension’ or ‘stress’. People are not able to manage their problems and the price of this intellectual failure is mental tension. Spirituality is the greatest source of crisis management. Spirituality cultivates high thinking in every man and woman, and this high thinking enables him or her to manage every crisis, to seek out solutions in every situation. Once a youth from Delhi came to me. He said he was working in a multinational company. He received a good monthly salary, but constantly lived in fear, because multi-nationals usually adopt the employment principle known as, ‘Hire and Fire.’ So, he always lived in fear of losing his job. I asked for his diary and wrote these words in it: “One can take away your job. But no one has the power to take away your destiny.” Then I explained what this meant. The youth was quite satisfied. His mind was completely changed. He consciously adopted my formula, and is still working in the same company without any problems. He is happy with his life.
