The Prophet received his first revelation in the Cave of Hira in 610 AD. He returned to Khadija's house where he used to live. The Prophet was anxious because for the first time an angel had come to him. He narrated his experience to Khadija. She advised him to go to a Christian scholar. His name was Waraqah ibn Nawfal who was about 90 years old. The Prophet went to Waraqah with Khadija. This is also a model for us. The Prophet could have said why should I, being a Muslim, go to a non-Muslim, a Christian? The Prophet didn’t do this. There is a great lesson in this. When I reflected, I realized that the Prophet was a person who had discovered God. The Prophet used to lead a God-oriented life. For one whose life revolves around God, everything else becomes secondary.
He does not think on these lines: he is Muslim or non-Muslim, he gave me respect or not, he made me suffer a loss or benefitted me. All these considerations become secondary. God is his greatest concern. The Prophet said it didn’t matter if Waraqah was a Christian. We should interact with him and gain experience. This is a great example. A person who finds God and discovers God becomes a complex-free soul. Some people divide humanity into us and them, Muslim and non-Muslim, friend and enemy. Such kind of thinking does not exist if you have discovered God. The first verse revealed to the Prophet said: "Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: created man from a clot [of blood]. Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One." (96:1-3)

The second verse said: "O, you, wrapped in your cloak, arise and give warning! Proclaim the glory of your Lord." (74:1-3)

Proclaiming God's greatness and discovering God's bounty -- this was the first lesson given to the Prophet.  When you give God the greatest position, everybody else becomes equal in your eyes.  Every person is equal to every other person. This was a great lesson given in the beginning to the Prophet.
