When you do something wrong, your conscience points out that you are wrong. Someone has said that conscience is God's voice. There is an angel within which speaks on God's behalf. When you remain silent, the other person's conscience remains active. The conscience of the person who troubles you or abuses you remains alive. His conscience keeps admonishing him. Gradually, the person becomes quiet himself. But if you speak up, you must know that every person has an ego النفس الأمارة within. (12:53) When you speak up, you awaken this ego. At that point, a person becomes even more stern. Your remaining quiet awakens the conscience of the other person. Your speaking up awakens his ego. The other person's conscience speaks on your behalf. When you adopt the policy of revenge, you fail to use this conscience
A person once uttered bad things about a companion. He abused the companion and provoked him. But the companion remained silent. This was the senior companion Abu Bakr. He kept on listening silently until he became angry and began to reply. The Prophet too was present but was quiet. When his companion began to reply, the Prophet left the place. Abu Bakr then went to the Prophet and asked: When the other person was speaking, you remained standing quietly. But when I spoke up, why did you leave the place? The Prophet told him something of Himalayan significance, an example of seeing from God's eyes. The Prophet said when you were quiet, God's angel was answering on your behalf. But when you started to answer for yourself and began to represent yourself, the angel left. And then I too left. This is nothing mysterious. There is always a natural explanation or a scientific meaning to things. God has placed a conscience inside every human being. The Quran calls it النفس اللوامہ. (75:2) This conscience dwells within every human being. There is no person without a conscience.
What is this conscience? Every person has experience of this. The conscience within keeps speaking to you. When you do something wrong, your conscience points out that you are wrong.
