Islam is eternal as regards its ideology. It doesn’t require revision. The Quran says: وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا بِلِسَانِ قَوْمِهِ (14:4) The language of every age is different. Language includes idiom and style. In this sense, the real failure is that Muslims couldn’t present Islam in today's language or today's idiom. The failure is of Muslims themselves. This is why, Islam couldn’t become understandable for people. Islam doesn’t address the thinking of the educated person today.
The current thinking of Muslims is that the greatest problem facing Islam is enmity of other groups and nations: they are constantly engaged in conspiracy against Islam. Conspiracy of others is Islam's greatest problem, it is believed. From here to America, you will hear this statement.
Based on my knowledge and experience, I will say that this thinking is completely wrong and baseless. The Quran says clearly: Copy Arabic text (3:120)
Any person's conspiracy or enmity cannot harm you in the least. This clear statement from the Quran tells us that the very proposition of conspiracy is baseless. The real reason is Muslims' own failure: failure of Muslim intellectuals, leaders and thinkers. Others' conspiracy or enmity can never be a problem.
What is that failure? The failure is that the Muslim mind could not update Islam in the modern age. To update Islam doesn’t mean revising Islamic teachings. Rather, it means to present Islam in the modern idiom, in the language of today. This is the sense I am trying to convey.
