When the Prophet listened to derogatory remarks, some abusive remarks, some blasphamous remarks, he simply smiled. That means he ignored. So, this is the sunnah of the Prophet of Islam. You have to ignore all Taslima Nasreens. You have to ignore all cartoons. You have to ignore all Salman Rushdis. This is the sunnah of the Prophet of Islam.
Once the Prophet of Islam was in Makkah. Someone said directly before him: You are a condemned person. We condemn you" مُذَمَّمٌ أَبَيْنَا، وَدِينَهُ قَلَيْنَا، وَأَمْرَهُ عَصَيْنَا. (Musnad al-Humaidi 325) This person said to the Prophet of Islam face to face. You are a condemned person. We condemn you. You are Muzammam. He said that you are not Muhammad, but you are Muzammam. Muhammad means praiseworthy, and Muzmmam means condemned person. He said that you are not a muhammad. You are a muzammam. This was a completely derogatory remark. It was a blasphemous remark. But what happened? The Prophet simply smiled and said nothing to that poet. Because he knows that these kind of words are not going to become history. These are simply some words, and words cannot produce any kind of negative result. It is simply lip service. So the Prophet of Islam smiled. Smile means he simply avoided. The Prophet of Islam ignored.
When the Prophet of Islam smiled at that time, it means that he ignored. So the best reaction towards all these things is that we have to ignore them. At the time of the cartoon controversy, you know some papers in Denmark published a cartoon that was derogatory in the eyes of Muslims. And there was hue and cry. At that I published an article with this title, Ignore Cartoons. This was based on Prophet's sunnah.
