The Role of the Prophet

The Prophet is a human being like us. He is not a mountainous person. He is not intimidating. There's nothing of this sort.قُلْ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي هَلْ كُنْتُ إِلَّا بَشَرًا رَسُولًا (17:93) The Prophet is a normal human being. The only difference is that God selects him so that he can deliver God's message to people. He sets a living example while staying in the midst of people. He gives a demonstration. This is the prophetic role.

What did the Prophet do when he receive prophethood? This happened in 7th century Arabia. The Prophet used to go to people's gatherings, or wherever he saw few people sitting together.  The Prophet would say: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قُولُوا: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، تُفْلِحُوا . (Musnad Ahmad 16022) This is to convey the message verbally. The Prophet would explain to people: You have been created by God. You should surrender before Him. You must follow divine teachings. You have not been settled on the earth for eternity. You won't stay here for thousands of years. You will stay here for a very limited period: 50, 60 or 70 years. You will die within 100 years.

What happens then? Just as after working the whole day, you take rest and fall asleep. Sleeping symbolizes death. When you sleep in an unconscious state at night, this sleep symbolizes death. It is as if, a person dies and is no more. But the next day he wakes up again from his sleep. This symbolizes that you will again be given life after death. (Ansab al-Ashraf, Al-Bazari 50)

God will wake you up again after death. Sleep symbolizes death. Waking up symbolizes you will be born again in the Hereafter. There you will be taken to account. There is either heaven or hell. This is how the Prophet conveyed the message. The Prophet comes to tell about God to people in spoken language. Another task of the Prophet is to demonstrate, or set a living example of everything. For example, he sets a living example of how to worship God, how to live in society, how to deal with others. He sets a living example of all of this. How to live if you have wealth, how to live if you don’t have wealth: the Prophet has an example for both.
