9. Good in What Appears Displeasing
The Quran teaches: “Believers, it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will, nor should you detain them wrongfully, so that you may take away a part of what you have given them, unless they are guilty of something clearly outrageous. Live with them in accordance with what is fair and kind; if you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something which God might make a source of abundant good.” (Quran, 4:19)
This verse underscores a fundamental principle of family life: humans are naturally different from one another, and the key to a successful life lies in the capacity to accommodate these differences.
In married life, disagreements may arise between spouses, leading one or both to feel that they made a mistake. in choosing their partner. However, such perceptions do not indicate a mistake of choice but are a result of wrong thinking. Both spouses must recognize that no individual can be deemed a “perfect husband” or a “perfect wife.” The essence of a successful marriage lies in learning to live harmoniously with an imperfect partner, guided by patience, understanding, and mutual respect.
Such adjustment is not a weakness; rather, it reflects profound wisdom. The ability to adapt to unfavourable circumstances is one of the foundations of human progress. With such adjustment, healthy relations between man and woman are strengthened, noble human qualities are developed, and hidden potentials are awakened. This condition is not a human invention; it is an inherent part of the Creator’s design. In this matter, neither man nor woman has any choice but to accept it.
