Trust in God

The Quran offers several pieces of guidance related to divorce, particularly in Surah At-Talaq. The relevant verses advise:

“O Prophet, when you divorce women, do so at the start of their waiting period and count it accurately. Fear Allah, your Lord. Do not expel them from their homes, nor should they leave unless they commit clear immorality. These are the limits set by Allah, and whoever exceeds them wrongs only himself. Allah may then bring about a different situation afterward. When they reach their appointed term, either retain them honourably or release them respectfully, and call upon two trustworthy witnesses to establish the testimony for Allah’s sake. This applies to those who believe in Allah and the Last Day. Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way for him and provide from unexpected sources. Whoever relies on Allah, He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose, having already decreed a measure for everything.” (Quran, 65:1-3)

Divorce represents a moment of crisis between a husband and wife. Such challenges, whether major or minor, are an inherent aspect of family life. The guidance provided in the Quran emphasizes placing complete trust in Allah and leaving the situation entirely in His hands as a key principle for navigating these crises.

A true crisis arises when a person feels helpless in a given situation. If the problem can be resolved through one’s own efforts, it does not constitute a crisis. A crisis occurs only when a person recognizes that their resources are insufficient to address the challenge. In other words, a crisis is the awareness of one’s limitations.

In such situations, focusing exclusively on one’s limitations only increases anxiety. The most effective approach is to take all reasonable measures within one’s ability and then entrust the outcome to Allah. One should strive diligently while ultimately relying on His wisdom and control.

This approach offers immediate psychological benefits by shifting attention from negative thinking to a constructive, positive mindset. It enables individuals to use their abilities more effectively to resolve problems and ensures that the natural system functions as it was intended. Just as the human body has mechanisms that work to restore balance when disrupted, life follows a similar pattern. When a crisis arises, the natural system moves to restore balance and rectify the situation.

Trusting in Allah during a crisis means trusting the natural order to work. It is mainly about placing the situation in Allah’s hands and allowing His wisdom to resolve it. This method of crisis resolution is clearly effective and applies in all situations. The key is that whenever a man or woman is confronted with a problem, the first step should be to think carefully about the situation. Rather than reacting immediately, they should think carefully about the situation before deciding what constructive action to take.  Such a thoughtful approach is the most effective way to handle a crisis.
